Chapter 4 - Accountable democracy

I actually think democracy's a smashing idea. It's massively misused by populists but the fundamental ideas are good. Everyone should have a voice regardless of your social, economic or educational status. And there's merit to this idea, it's an incredibly elitist mindset to believe that good ideas or valid opinions only come from certain social circles or economic backgrounds. To give everyone an equal opportunity to get their say in is, I think a rather fair system.

However I don't think every opinion's equal in merit.

For example the average Brexit geezer who thought that exiting an alliance with the majority of our neighbouring countries would be a good thing were obviously full of shit and talking a load on nonsense. At best you were misled but still that's on you mate. Nigel Farage arguably one of the most vocal supporter of Brexit promised us things that never came to fruition and he faces zero reprecussions for his words and actions, in fact a significant portion of the UK public now supports this fucking cunt in becoming the next prime minister.

I have no problem with this. Along with Yaxley Lenin (aka Tommy Robinson) everyone has the right to free speech and their supporters have the freedom of choice. It's not my place to tell others what to do. What I will say is, if your actions negatively affects this country there should be reprecussions. Whether you're the one doing the talking or the one doing the voting.

The reason why I believe this is because voters along with the politicians aren't held accountable for their actions, regardless of the outcome. Since there's no accountability, noone does their own research, people say what they want and there's no incentive to do otherwise. What I propose is a slight adjustment to the current system.

Instead of having a suave, posh prick come up to stage to talk a load of drivel each party would submit a manifesto. This document should be limited to singular A4 page. The truth is always simple, lies always build upon themselves. I don't want to be preachy but this is a general rule to life I follow hence why I think it should be condensed down to a single page making it easy to understand. The manifesto should be a list of tangible goals with benchmarks for success along with a realistic timeline of when we can expect results (I understand having something like this would disincentivise long term projects where the effects may not be seen for years but I've yet to see 1 long term project (HS2 recently) come to light and live up to expectations so they can suck my balls). Voters vote based on the manifesto using their best judgement.

Now this is the bit everyone will hate. If things go well the elected party members and their supporters should be rewarded. This can be a small cash reward, a reduction in tax rates, shorter wait times in the NHS, whatever it may be there should be an incentive. However if things go wrong because you voted for the wrong person, there should be a penalty applied to the elected officials and their supporters. Again a small cash payment (relative to income so this doesn't disproportionately affect the poor), an increase in tax rates, limited access to public services, something that will punish and inconvenience you. The measure of success will be based on the benchmarks proposed in the manifesto. Also if the politician does a really poor job I say we bring back good old fashioned stoning. Walk him or her naked in the streets of London where the public will violently hurl stones. To be the leader of a country is no easy feat and those who wish to hold such prestige shouldn't approach it with a light heart, responsiblity will scare away bad actors like Keir "oh look he's married to a jew what a massive coincidence, the fucking cunt" Starmer. Won't this system decrease the number of voters? Yes it will and I say good. Too many idiots have a voice, if you're confident in your beliefs and think you're billy big bollocks instead of talking shit on Facebook put your money where your mouth is. Ultimately we have a social and political system that fears accountability. Without accountability there's no incentive to do good things and bad actions go unpunished, this destroys our social cohesion since there's no reason to act in good faith.

But people fear accountability so I can only see this idea being hated. I agree there's hidden gems in humanity but so often they remain buried amongst the pile of shit that is humanity. Hopefully this can separate the wheat from the chaff.
